Who we are

Background

Astei was set up in 1996, when Resu bought and did up his mother’s homestead. The restaurant opened in 1999, by which time Resu had already been working in Gernika’s well-known Restaurante Arrien for ten years, and before that in Zimela since 1981.

The year after Astei opened, Resu’s daughter, Uritz, enrolled on a degree course in the Catering School of Leioa. She continued honing her professional skills on a variety of courses at the Catering School of Artxanda. In 2011 the Basque Culinary Centre was inaugurated and there Uritz took a Masters degree in management and innovation in catering companies.

Mission

Astei is to be found in the heart of the countryside, between Urdaibai and the Urkiola national park. It is the ideal setting for every type of celebration. Whatever the event, we’ll make you feel at home.

Enjoy your meal in our high-ceilinged dining room with impressive views, accompanied in winter by the warmth of an open fire. We also have a terrace where guests can choose to eat if the weather is fine, whatever the season.

Astei will mold itself to your requirements. Our timetable is flexible, offering lunches from 12 o’clock midday till 5pm; elevenses, high teas and dinners of all kinds, at any time, for walkers and nature-lovers; mixed platters, children’s menus, special menus, à la carte, snacks…

Cuisine

Based on fresh, locally-sourced, high-quality products, our dishes are prepared with care, making sure not to hide the food’s organoleptic properties, and enhancing its distinct characteristics.
Our specialities are lamb, roasted in a wood oven, and freshly-caught fish of the day.
